Let’s understand the understanding.

Water: A very simple word. We and our kids might be reading, observing , studying it from the time they start understanding the world around them.

I wonder if we ever thought of the power of this single word in framing our kids future.

If today you ask your kids to write or speak a few lines on this topic, they will start thinking…...How many of them would be able to write or speak confidently? Tell them to draw, write or speak something on water.Try this activity with your kids.

Another activity you should try is ask your kid if they can provide a solution for solving water crisis or can think of minimizing water pollution around them. Don’t tell them the problem let them ask. Let them ask what is water pollution , let them ask what is water crises. This activity you can try with your 5 year old too.

(A note to parents as guide. We generally try to tell or teach about problems instead of asking them solutions. Asking for solutions is kind of reverse engineering where solution will lead to understand them problem better rather than we telling them what is the problem.

Don’t tell them what to write. Just guide them to recall what they have studied about it in Science, English and what they observe daily. Then see what they can write or speak. )

It's important to understand this activity in perspective. Here we are guiding our kids to consolidate their knowledge and hence their understanding.

Lot of careers are associated with water….just think of the list and believe me it would end up lasting at least two pages.

So it is very important to distinguish between the knowledge and learning. Although not possible with each and every topic, nevertheless we need to guide our kids to convert their learning and knowledge in understanding.

You can send your child creativity as text images , or voice drawings ,or text. We will publish and share and let the creativity evolves. The beauty of this topic is that it's relevant for every age, a 2 yr old can draw pictures on it and a 10 year old can write an essay or a 15 year old can address a group of intellectuals  (and a grown up like us can write a thesis may be.. Just kidding)

The Lock

(This is fourth article in the series)

To introduce THE LOCK I am going to share two of my favorite quotes which basically sum up the essence of it.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change”

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change”

Yes, the lock is “ADAPTATION TO CHANGE”

From times immemorial, parents have been instrumental in guiding their kids to their future. In olden times it used to be pre-determined. A carpenter’s kid would grow up to be a carpenter, a locksmith’s kid a locksmith and so on. Times slowly transformed this ‘fixed future’ approach into that of a ‘secured future’. Earn a BA degree and get a guaranteed job as a clerk. Get a BE in Computers and a software engineering job awaits you. But this generation is different. With the lifestyle complexities increasing exponentially, the kids would need to make decisions based on what they ‘like’ doing vs what ‘pays’ them vs what's more ‘secure’ and a whole lot of unknowns added to the mix. This is where the ‘adaptable future’ approach will come to the rescue, which leads us to THE LOCK. And only those who are equipped with the four keys we discussed earlier would have the power to unlock it. How? You would ask.

Let me try to put it in a single line like this

If we understand the change and assimilate it while ensuring that it is good for our own development, then we can convince others and can eventually manage that change such that we can bring a good change not only in our lives but others to whom we are connected.

Now that we have found the keys and have understood their purpose, What's next? You would ask.

To put things in perspective, I will go back to soldier example again

So, soldier is having a knife but he needs to be trained to use that knife. The one better trained with knife will survive. Similarly, being guardians we need to guide our kids to get these trainings.

Lets encourage our kids to understand what they are doing every hour.

Well the four keys should be

1 Understanding

2. Self development and self-assessment

3. Communication

4. Management

Understanding

This is very basic and highly neglected tool. Basic questions like- What's going around me? Why is it happening? What do I want to do? Why am I doing this? All these questions revolve around understanding. The capability of someone to understand any thing is the first key of survival and amounts to winning the half battle. This is also important because the world is converging, we are interacting with people from numerous varied cultures so we need to understand them to deal with them and make the most of the situation.

Self Development

We cannot develop a society before developing our self. This is true. If we understand something and cannot use it for our development then it is like holding a glass of water when you are thirsty and cannot drink. That's where self development comes to fore.

Also, we need to assess what we have developed. Self-assessment helps staying on track.

For that we need to make sure we are accessing with good competition and thus developing society.   

Communicate

Once you are developed  then you start developing society, because if you don't then your own development will kill you. Someone said correctly never argue with uneducated people because they will bring you down to their levels and beat you.For that you need to communicate. This is the another  key of survival because if you can not communicate properly then your understanding and development can proved to be wrong.

Management 

We nowadays hear about management professionals everywhere. Why? Because this is the master key. Any goofs up in understanding , development and communication can be handled by this key and this will give you an edge with others.

So now the challenge among us is to train our kids and equip them with these tools.

Treasure Hunt

One is owner of one's own life.

The same holds true for our kids too, right? We parents are the guardians. But unconsciously  we act as owners of our kid’s life.

A soldier getting prepared for war is equipped with things like a gun, knife, long shoes, water bottle, maps, some food etc ....If he is well-equipped and well prepared then not only his chances of survival would increase but he would have a better shot at winning.

Similarly being guardians we need to figure out such tools for our kids so that we can guide them properly and help them in their training and skill development so that they know how and when to best utilize these tools and own their lives in a better way.

Lets try to find out if we can actually identify these tools....I see it as finding a treasure for my kids Select Any four option  and submit

Present Vs Future

Why Should you worry about the future? 

You don't even know the Present properly.

Take care of the present 

and 

the future will take care of itself

This is most applicable for us being parents. We are more worried about our kids future so we ignore their present.We think so much about creating their future that we ignore their present to prepare them for future.
